Chino Ridge creates
conceptual sculptures and installations, exploring primary themes around culture, history, and value.
Using history to decipher the present and ponder the future, which often informs important conceptual aspects of her works. Her exploration of value comes from her contrasting experiences of commercial design and traditional craft. Value is imputed and relative, yet perceived to be intrinsic and absolute. Embracing the principle of ‘Every day as epic on its own’, Chino explores all of these aspects within her art.
Chino's work is heavily influenced by her upbringing in Japan along with cultural and operational parameters in her life and work to date. Liberating herself from a career in the fashion industry, Chino took an intellectual and spiritual journey towards developing an evasion to commonality and dominant cultural norms. As part of this process, Chino began to deeply contemplate the nature of value and sought to explore this in her art. With her works often holding an observational factor, representing her voice in an alienated state, Chino amalgamates elements from her research and explores them using a range of materials to achieve perfect execution for her concepts. Chino cherishes copper and vitreous enamel as her signature materials. Silversmithing methods as her chisels, marble and canvas, and vitreous enamel as brushes and paints, which symbolise who she is as an artist.
